Brian Griffin: A Portrait of Our Time

Thu 07 Dec 1978 - Sun 07 Jan 1979

This event is part of our Past Programme

07 Dec - 07 Jan 1979

Brian Griffin has titled his exhibition ‘A Portrait of Our Time’. We first showed his work in the ’Young British Photographers’ exhibition when he was taking almost exclusively reportage pictures. Since that time he has concentrated more on portraiture although this show does include the work as he says:

“My exhibition covers the years 1972–78 and features heavily portrait photographs. These are interspersed with two small sections, one devoted to miscellaneous photographs taken on assignments and the other to ‘self portraiture’.

I prefer to work on professional assignments as I find it helps me investigate situations with more enthusiasm, commitment and discipline. Otherwise, I very rarely take the camera out with me.

My personal work in the exhibition, the ‘self portraiture’ section is basically self analytical, using models, environment and symbols the parody my innermost feelings."

Brian Griffin studied photography at Manchester Polytechnic from 1969–72 and has worked as a freelance since that time. Based in London he has had work featured in Vogue, Harpers and Queen, Grazia (Italy), Weekend Magazine (Toronto), Management Today, Radio Times,  Creative Camera, Sunday Times and U.S. Camera Annual. This is the first one-man exhibition but he has taken part in the group shows ‘Young British Photographers’ 1975 and Midland Open Photography, 1978.
