The Citibank Private Bank Photography Prize 1997 was held at the Royal College of Art between 23 - 31 January 1997. The inaugural Prize shortlist was Richard Billingham, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Catherine Yass, Uta Barth and Mat Collishaw.

The jury of the 1997 Prize was Ian Dunlop (Chairman), Head of The Citibank Private Bank Art Advisory Service, London, Richard Cork, Art Critic for The Times, Mark Haworth-Booth, Curator of Photographs, V & A, Maureen Paley, Director of Interim Art, Tessa Traeger, photographer and Paul Wombell, Director of The Photographers' Gallery.

Lord Snowdon presented the £10,000 Prize to 26 year old Richard Billingham on 22 January 1997.

Richard Billingham was born in Birmingham in 1970. He was nominated for a stunning series of photographs of his family taken over a six year period which were originally a source material for paintings whilst studying Fine Art at the University of Sunderland. First exhibited in 1995 at Anthony Reynolds Gallery, London, the works have since received international acclaim. Selected images feature in Billingham's book, Ray's A Laugh, published by Scalo, 1996. He is currently based in the West Midlands.
